Bad, Bad Bunny. Did you just hop, hop, hijack the holiday again? Wait, no, not that Bad Bunny. We’re not talking Super Bowl singer, but rather the singularly most important character and event in the history of mankind. That is… if you believe the Biblical account of Christ.

You remember the story or know of it… death, burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ... the Easter story of eternal redemption from sin that began with Adam, Eve and fruit. Most everything in various versions of Christian faith point to Easter.
Holiday Hop, Hop, Hop
So, when did the Bunny bounce into the story? Ahh… the alternative narrative. Some trace Easter back to ancient pagans and Spring traditions that referenced fertility… the Bunny being prodigious at reproduction. More recently, German immigrants are said to have brought their version of an egg hunt to Pennsylvania… a tradition that lives to this day.

Let’s not debate fertility, concede colored eggs are pretty, and chocolate bunnies delicious. I’ve chewed off a few chocolate bunny ears and so have you. Let’s even say bunnies, eggs, bonnets, and celebrations of Spring are OK, if not delightful to some. But here’s where hijacking the holiday becomes a discussion and more likely a debate.
One, the Other, or Both?
Is Easter enjoyed with Peter Cottontail but a child’s delight… or intended distraction from the Easter story of Christ? Not really a conspiracy guy, but it’s not investigative insight to note Santa to Christmas is like Bunny to Easter… fun, festive, great tradition. What stick-in-the-mud doesn’t like a good story? No doubt, colored eggs are easier to absorb than the crucifixion, a tortuous execution perfected by the Romans. But the question remains. Is Easter one, the other, or both?
Eggs or Empty Tomb
What’s clear is what Easter cannot be… to a true believer. And that would be Christ-less. Now make no mistake. If one does not believe Jesus Christ came to save sinners via his Easter sacrifice and resurrection, all this bunny babble is pointless. One who identifies as Christian may take or leave the fun and frivolity of modern Easter as they please or purpose. However, to celebrate Easter, shall we say, all-bunny all the time… is sadly lacking, again, akin to taking Christ out of Christmas.

Holiday Suggestion
Here’s an idea. Read the Easter story this Easter. Ponder the point of Christ coming in the first place… and the resurrection that left an empty tomb. Maybe you color an egg, consume some chocolate… or not. Either way, keep that Bad Bunny from hijacking your Easter this year.
